By Janan Chan (陳臻)

In this webinar, Janan Chan (陳臻), a doctoral student in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education at McGill University, presented different ways to build students' multilinguistic awareness through creative writing. Chan offered four activities that can be adapted in class to engage students in critical reflections on their own language use and linguistic and cultural upbringings. Through  these activities, Chan proposes shifting writing away from a purely assessment-driven practice and instead positioning it as a form of expression and linguistic identity. He encourages teachers to use translingual writing to build students’ sociolinguistic awareness and creativity rather than simply assimilate them into the dominant classroom language.
