Project Description:
This SSHRC Insight Grant project (2023-2027) focuses on children’s critical engagements through English and French teachers' cross-language/curricular teacher collaborations across Québec and British Columbia. Using a collaborative action research approach, researchers and teachers work together to co-build relationship and capacity in identifying and maximizing reciprocal language learning opportunities, co-creating innovative instructional strategies and tools, promoting critical reading, and fostering students' intercultural awareness and civic engagement.

Project Goals:
The study aims to advance plurilingualism theory and instruction/assessment practices for critical learning, reconfiguring curricular coherence and coordination of English and French teaching and learning in immersion/intensive and other bilingual contexts to respond to the complex sociolinguistic realities of an increasingly interconnected world.

Project Details:

Investigates how Grade 4-6 English and French teachers in Quebec and British Columbia can collaborate across languages and subjects to enhance meaningful learning, especially for students from immigrant backgrounds.

Explores how through using literary texts in both languages can foster children's critical engagement with eco-social issues and create connections between languages for deeper understanding.
